Why does my bathroom smell musty (and how can I fix it)?

From Musty to Magnificent: How to Banish Bathroom Odours for Good

We’ve all experienced it: you walk into your bathroom expecting a fresh, clean scent, but instead, you’re met with a heavy, damp odour. In coastal regions like Marbella and Mijas, the high humidity can turn your thick, fluffy towels into a breeding ground for mildew if they aren't cared for correctly.

The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to fix it. Here is how to refresh your bathroom linens and keep that "boutique hotel" freshness all year round.

1. The "Vinegar & Soda" Reset

If your towels smell even after they’ve been washed, they likely have a "detergent build-up." Over time, fabric softeners create a waxy layer that traps bacteria.

  • The Fix: Wash your towels on a hot cycle with one cup of white vinegar (no detergent). Follow it up with a second hot cycle using half a cup of baking soda. This strips away the build-up and neutralises odours naturally.

2. Master the Art of Drying

In Spain, we often rely on the sun to dry our laundry. While the UV rays are great for killing bacteria, leaving towels out too long can make them feel "crisp" and scratchy.

  • The Tip: Dry towels until they are almost done, then give them a 10-minute "fluff" in the tumble dryer to keep them soft. Crucially, never fold and put away a towel that is even slightly damp—this is the primary cause of that musty wardrobe smell.

3. Ventilation is Key

Many Spanish bathrooms are "internal" (without a window). If you don’t have a powerful extractor fan, moisture has nowhere to go.

  • The Fix: Always spread your towel out fully on a rail after use—never bunch it up on a hook. Consider upgrading to a High-GSM (Grams per Square Metre) Cotton Towel. While they are thicker, high-quality combed cotton actually breathes better and dries more efficiently than cheaper synthetic blends.

4. Refresh Your Bath Mats

Bath mats are the unsung heroes of the bathroom, but they soak up the most moisture. If your mat has a rubber backing, it can trap water against the floor.

  • The Advice: Switch to 100% Cotton "Hotel Style" Bath Mats. These can be tossed into the washing machine as easily as a towel, ensuring they are cleaned and dried frequently.

Ready for a Refresh? Sometimes, towels are simply past their best. If your linens have lost their absorbency or the musty smell persists after a vinegar reset, it’s time to treat yourself to a fresh set of high-quality, 100% cotton towels.
