When shopping for towels in Spain, you will frequently see the term "GSM," but many customers are unsure what this actually signifies regarding the quality and performance of their bathroom linens.

"GSM" stands for Grams per Square Metre. It is the standard industry measurement for the weight and density of the fabric. Essentially, the higher the GSM, the thicker, heavier, and more absorbent the towel will be.

At Yorkshire Linen, our collection typically ranges from 400 GSM to 700 GSM. Understanding which weight is right for your home is the first step to a better bathroom experience.

• 400-500 GSM: These are often referred to as "lightweight" towels. They are thinner and dry much faster than their heavier counterparts. These are the perfect choice for the gym, for guest bathrooms that see frequent use, or for the height of the Spanish summer when you want a towel that dries quickly on the line.
• 500-600 GSM: This is the "sweet spot" for everyday luxury. Most high-end hotel towels fall into this category. They offer a significant level of fluffiness and excellent absorbency without being so heavy that they take days to dry.
• 600-700+ GSM: This is "Ultimate Luxury" territory. These towels are heavy, incredibly plush, and feel like a warm hug when you step out of the shower. While they are the most absorbent, they do require more drying time and are often preferred for master suites where comfort is the absolute priority.

When choosing your towels, consider your lifestyle. If you live in a humid coastal area, a mid-weight 550 GSM towel might be more practical than a massive 800 GSM sheet that stays damp in the bathroom. There is nothing quite like the feeling of a brand-new, fluffy towel, but many people find that after a few months of washing, their towels become "scratchy" or lose their ability to soak up water. In Spain, where we often deal with "hard water" (water with a high mineral content), maintaining towel softness requires a few specific tricks.

The most common mistake people make is using too much fabric softener. It sounds counter-intuitive, but fabric softener works by coating the fibres of the cotton with a thin layer of chemicals (waxes). While this makes them feel slippery and soft at first, it actually creates a waterproof barrier. Over time, this buildup prevents the towel from absorbing water, leaving you feeling damp after a shower. Instead of softener, try adding half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle once a month. This helps strip away mineral deposits and detergent buildup, naturally softening the cotton and restoring its absorbency.

Secondly, pay attention to temperature and drying. While it is tempting to wash towels at 90°C to "kill germs," high heat can damage the cotton fibres, causing them to become brittle and break. A 40°C or 60°C wash is usually more than enough. When it comes to drying, the Mediterranean sun is wonderful, but leaving towels on the line for too long can "bake" the fibres, resulting in that stiff, cardboard-like feel. If possible, give your towels 10 minutes in a tumble dryer on a low heat setting after they come off the line; this "fluffs" the loops of the cotton back up, giving you that boutique hotel finish.

Lastly, never wash towels with items that have zips or hooks, such as jeans or bras. These can snag the loops of the towel, leading to unsightly pulled threads. If you do get a pull, simply snip it off with scissors—because towels are woven, a snip won't cause the whole towel to unwrap!
